PNR status not working? What to do

  1. Don't panic-book a second ticket. Your ticket is safe; only the lookup is down.
  2. Try again in 15–30 minutes. Outages are usually short, and this page shows when it is back.
  3. Check the SMS from IRCTC. Chart and confirmation messages still reach the number on the ticket.
  4. Need to know where the train is? Live train status uses a separate system and usually keeps working.
  5. Call 139, Indian Railways' enquiry line, if you need the status urgently.

How to check PNR status when IRCTC is down

  • SMS 139: send PNR <10-digit PNR> to 139.
  • Call 139 and choose PNR enquiry.
  • Your IRCTC SMS: chart-prepared and confirmation messages still reach the booking mobile.

These run on Indian Railways' own systems, so in a full outage they can fail too.

What happened in recent IRCTC outages

Saturday, 24 October 2026: PNR, seat availability and train schedule enquiry unreachable

Indian Railways' enquiry service on indianrail.gov.in failed across India: PNR status first intermittently from about 9:00 AM IST, then PNR, seat availability and train schedule completely from about 3:45 PM IST. Other PNR apps were affected too.

  • about 9:00 AM IST: Indian Railways' PNR service starts failing intermittently: slow answers, HTTP 500 errors and the message “Unable to process your request.”
  • about 3:45 PM IST: Every PNR lookup fails. www.indianrail.gov.in still answers on its home page, but every page under /enquiry/ (PNR, seat availability, train schedule) has its connection reset.
  • 8:10 PM IST: Still down when we last checked. RailYatri shows “PNR status not available at the moment” and ConfirmTkt cannot fetch the PNR either.

Still working: IRCTC ticket booking site (irctc.co.in) loads normally. NTES live train running status (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) works.

What exactly failed (technical)
DNS, the TCP connection and the HTTPS handshake to www.indianrail.gov.in all succeed, and its F5 BIG-IP load balancer answers the home page. Requests to the PNR application (/enquiry/…) are reset right after the handshake (ERR_CONNECTION_RESET), which points to the PNR application servers behind the load balancer being unavailable.

IRCTC down: common questions

Is IRCTC down today?
The live board at the top of this page answers that. We check PNR enquiry, seat availability, train schedule and live running status every 3 minutes, and PNR also from real PNR checks made on RailTC. If a service shows “Down”, it is failing for everyone, not only for you. The IRCTC booking site and app can still work while an enquiry service is down.
Why is indianrail.gov.in not opening?
When the PNR enquiry servers behind indianrail.gov.in are down, the site's PNR pages fail to load or show “This site can't be reached” (ERR_CONNECTION_RESET) while its home page may still open. It is an Indian Railways server problem; your internet connection is fine.
How can I check PNR status if the IRCTC website is down?
Send an SMS with PNR followed by your 10-digit PNR number to 139, or call 139 and choose PNR enquiry. These use Indian Railways' own systems, so during a full outage they may fail too. Chart and confirmation SMS from IRCTC still arrive on the number used for booking.
Is my ticket cancelled if PNR status is not loading?
No. When the PNR enquiry service is down, only the status lookup fails. Your booking, berth and waitlist position are unchanged, and IRCTC still sends chart and confirmation SMS to the number on the ticket.
Why does PNR status say “Unable to process your request”?
That message comes from Indian Railways' own PNR system when it cannot answer, usually because it is overloaded or partly down. It is not a problem with your PNR number. Wait 15–30 minutes and try again.
Should I book another ticket because I can't see my status?
Not just because the status page is down. Check again once the service is back, or look at the SMS from IRCTC. If your status really is a low waitlist close to the journey, RailTC's prediction and pre-booking check can help you decide on a backup.
When is IRCTC's PNR service unavailable every day?
Every night from about 11:30 PM to 12:30 AM IST IRCTC runs maintenance, and PNR enquiry does not work. Outside that window it should work; when it doesn't, this page shows it.
Does live train running status still work?
Usually yes. Running status comes from a separate system (NTES), which kept working during the 24 Oct 2026 PNR outage. Use RailTC's live train status to see where your train is.
