Train coach position: where will my coach stop?

Know which end of the platform to walk to. Here is how coach order works, what codes like B3 and S5 mean, and where to check today's order for your train. कोच पोजीशन: मेरा कोच कहाँ रुकेगा?

Check today's coach order for your train

  1. Open IRCTC Online Charts and enter your train number, journey date and boarding station.
  2. Once the chart is prepared (about 4 hours before the train leaves its first station), it lists the coaches in order.
  3. Find your coach (for example B3) and count from the engine: that is where it stops on the platform.

What a coach order looks like

An example to show how to read it, not a real train. Your train's order is on its chart.

Engine
#1-Other
#2B13A
#3B23A
#4B33A
#5B43A
#6-Other
#7A12A
#8H11A

Here coach B3 is #4 from the engine, so you would wait near the engine end. “Other” is a car the chart does not list (general, pantry, luggage or generator).

If your ticket is still waitlisted, RailTC shows the chance it confirms before the chart, and your coach and berth once it does.

How to read the coach order

Position #1 is the first car behind the engine. If your coach is #4, walk towards the engine end of the platform; if it is #18 on a 22-car train, wait near the far end. Big stations show the same order on the coach display boards, and the boards also tell you which end the engine will stop at.

Once you are at your coach, the seat and berth finder shows where your seat is inside it: lower or upper berth, window or aisle, near the door or the middle.

Coach codes on your ticket

  • HFirst AC (1A)
  • HAFirst AC + AC 2 Tier, one coach
  • AAC 2 Tier (2A)
  • BAC 3 Tier (3A)
  • MAC 3 Economy (3E)
  • SSleeper (SL)
  • CAC Chair Car (CC)
  • EExecutive Chair Car (EC)
  • DSecond Sitting (2S)

So B3 is the third AC 3 Tier coach, and S5 the fifth Sleeper coach.

Coach position FAQ

How do I find my coach position on the platform?

Open IRCTC's Online Charts, choose your train, journey date and boarding station, and it lists the train's coaches in order once the chart is prepared. At the station, the coach display boards above the platform show the same order, and the NTES app from Indian Railways also has a coach position option.

Why is the coach position not showing yet?

IRCTC publishes the coach order with the reservation chart, usually about 4 hours before the train leaves its first station. Before that the order is blank, so check again closer to departure.

Does the coach order stay the same every day?

Usually, because most trains run with a fixed rake, but coaches can be added, removed or reordered. Today's chart is the reliable answer, so check it on the day you travel.

What are the gaps marked Other?

IRCTC's chart lists reserved coaches only. A gap in the numbering is a car it does not list: a general (unreserved) coach, the pantry car, or a luggage and generator car. They still take up a place in the train.

Which end is the engine at my station?

Positions count from the engine. At some stations the engine is moved to the other end and the order runs backwards, so match the order with the platform's coach display board when the train arrives.
